The media these days are full of “virtuality”: Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and the like. The message of this lecture is that humankind has been “doing” virtuality for thousands of years — and that it is actually a very central element in the human experience. This lecture will first briefly explain what is meant by “virtuality” and then survey a few of the areas of life that humans have been “virtualizing” from the start.
